Formative assessment uses evidence gathered during learning to decide what teaching or practice should happen next. A question becomes useful when its answers help the teacher and learner act on a specific learning need.
Pedagogy connects a learning goal with the teaching, practice and evidence that help learners reach it. Start with formative assessment, then use the planning guides to turn an explanation into a classroom decision.
Identify the decision you need to make
Before planning a check, name the understanding you want to see. A question about whether a learner can explain equal parts calls for different evidence from a question about whether they can carry out a calculation. Use the lesson below to connect your goal, your prompt and your next teaching move.
Read examples as decisions, not scripts
In each example, notice the learner’s response, the teacher’s possible interpretation and the proposed follow-up. Ask what other explanation might fit the response. Adapt the representation, language and amount of support to your setting rather than copying an activity unchanged.
Check learning after feedback
Try the self-checks before opening their explanations. Then design a fresh classroom example that tests the same idea. A corrected answer can show that a learner followed a prompt; an independent explanation on another task gives additional evidence about understanding.
A task to try
Choose one lesson you will teach. Write a learning goal, one prompt that reveals understanding and two different next steps for contrasting learner responses.
